How could I have a SnackBreak segment and not discuss hangover cures, the myths, the truths and my personal approach to avoiding a rough Sunday morning.
I’ve heard many things come through my inbox, hangover cures that my readers, listeners and friends swear by. From fried, greasy food to my go-to of a chocolate shake and fried pickles here’s what to try to get over the worst experience that comes after the best night.
In my personal experience, I have found my (seemingly) unbeatable elixir to avoid a hangover without drunk eating everything in sight.
Here’s my secret combo: A peanut butter sandwich, ibuprofen, and lots of water.
These are all things I normally have around the house and PB is even better after a night of drinking I can assure you. But here’s the catch: eat a PB sandwich, drink some water and take ibuprofen BEFORE you fall asleep. That’s right…if you have just woken up and need a fix for already having a hangover, it’s okay. Dim your phone’s screen light and scroll down a little.
If you’re not a PB person (bless your heart) maybe one of these other hangover cures (or tricks to avoid a hangover) could help you.
- My next day go-to are fried pickles and a chocolate shake. Maybe it works, or maybe I just like ice cream.
- Oatmeal – easy on the stomach, lots of fiber and dense to soak up your mistakes from last night.
- Bacon double cheeseburger – if you can stomach this, it may help. My friends swear it makes them feel better…I myself can’t ever get food down when I’m hungover. So, if it works have at it.
- Raw eggs – this one is weird, I would never try this and I’m suggesting you don’t either. However, this seems to be one of the most popular of hangover lore. The thought of throwing raw eggs, tomato juice and a beer into a tall glass and guzzling it down makes me feel sicker sober than I ever have felt hungover.
- A Michelada – basically make yourself a bloody mary with a beer instead of vodka.
If any of these fail, remember one thing. If you’re that hungover the only help you may have is to drink a morning beer and wish for the best. Hopefully you’ll feel better in a few hours.
