This Food is Related to Poison

Have you heard about the poison Nightshade?

You might be as surprised as me to know that common food such as potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, tobacco and some peppers are considered Nightshade vegetables.

Plant families are groups of food that have similar characteristics.

Look at a potato flower and a Nightshade flower the resemblance is striking. The Darker flower is Nightshade, where as the lighter picture shown is a potato flower.

These foods obviously are good for you, so it’s shocking for those of us who aren’t botanists that these are in the same veggie family!

Use the slide to see each flower, side by side.

So what’s so crazy about Nightshade? There are many poisonous plants that people know to steer clear of. This poison dates back centuries, with some historians believing that the Roman Emperor Claudius was assassin using this plant. Roman Emperor Augustus also supposedly fell victim to this plant by his wife.

How interesting is it that a plant, in the same family as those we eat weekly, or sometimes daily is so deadly.
